- September 29, 2016, while still under construction in Papenburg (Germany), NCL Joy caught fire at the shipbuilding yard. The vessel was in the yard’s building hall 2 (indoors) when its manifold inflamed causing thick smoke that engulfed the building. The fire alarm was activated. To the shipyard was dispatched a firefighting team which quickly extinguished the fire. During the incident, all workers were evacuated outside. No injuries were reported. All construction works were temporarily suspended. Fire damages were estimated to around EUR 50,000. The investigation for the fire is underway.
- October 9, 2016, a second shipyard fire was reported to be broken out during the vessel’s construction at Meyer Werft. The accident occurred on the Saturday morning. The fire was in the yard’s construction hall 2. Firefighting crews were immediately dispatched. Again, no injuries were reported, and the yard’s all personnel was evacuated from the building. According to the shipbuilder’s official statement, the fire started on a deck 9 cabin veranda. As result, several of the upper decks were damaged and the ship’s construction works were halted.
- Note: The vessel was previously named “Norwegian Bliss”. The “Bliss” name was selected via NCL-hosted online contest. The ship’s construction started on September 16, 2015. On October 12, 2015 was officially announced that the cruise ship will be redesigned for the Chinese market. The new “Norwegian Joy” name was announced on March 30, 2016, along with the home-ports in China – Shanghai and Tianjin.
